Facts about Gum disease

Studies show that gum (periodontal) disease is linked to heart disease, pre-term low weight births and other systemic conditions. Gum Disease is an infection of the gums and is one of the main causes of tooth loss amongst adults. There are two major stages of gum disease: Gingivitis & Periodontitis. About 10% of the population is prone to periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early. The signs and symptoms are red, swollen and puffy gums that bleed easily. If treatment is not received, gingivitis could lead to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the serious and advanced stage of gum disease which includes bone loss and is irreversible. The gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth could become seriously damaged and the teeth affected could become loose and fall out. Suprisingly there is often no pain.

Prevention and Treatment
The best preventions against gum disease are; Brushing twice a day, Flossing daily and regular dental check ups (including xrays) and cleaning.

While gum disease is a very serious dental condition, it can be treated and stabilised. Our dental hygienist, Rhonda Kremmer, is highly qualified and has worked for some of the leading gum specialists in Victoria. We have had great success with the treatment of gum disease for our patients. Regular dental check ups are a key factor in early detection of gum disease.

Maintenance
Scaling may have to be repeated in the future. It is customary to return for reassessment in 3-4 months. Scientific evidence clearly shows that for individuals who have periodontal disease, an interval of 6 months is too long. We are familiar with your particular periodontal situation and will determine the appropriate interval for you. As your situation changes, there may be changes in the length of these intervals as well.

Preventing Recurrence
Once initial treatment is completed, your cooperation is vital if the procedures are to be successful. If you do your part with the brushing and flossing and maintain your scheduled dental hygiene recare visits, the odds in your favour increase greatly.
