Smile Makeover

Making the decision to have a Smile Makeover can be difficult as it is hard to imagine what your smile will look like. We have a Smile Makeover system that allows you to try your smile before we do any work.

How do I try my Smile Makeover?

After a thorough consultation with you, we will work together to find out what you would like to change, what improvements are possible and the treatment options available. We will take a digital scan and analyse your teeth. A bespoke Smile Makeover design will be prepared.

Do all the Smile Makeovers look the same?

No! Everyone is different and we think that your smile should look like you. We see far too many smiles that look the same. We take into account what you look like now, the colour of your skin, eyes & hair, and the shape of your lips. All of these are important in planning a unique design.

When will I see the results?

A second Smile Makeover design session will be made. This is the exciting part where you see your smile start to come to life. We will use temporary dental material to form temporary veneers over your existing teeth. So you get to try out the results before we commence the journey. You will leave our dental practice with these fitted in place so that you have time to decide on your Smile Makeover.

What are the treatments for a smile makeover?

We always begin with a dental examination, clean and any necessary X-ray films to make sure your teeth are healthy.
Next we may consider orthodontic treatment, followed by tooth whitening.
Once you are happy with the colour of your teeth, we will begin the process of bonding and/or veneers to improve the shape and length of your teeth.
Maintenance is relatively simple, where we will check and polish your teeth every 6 months to keep them in great shape.

What are veneers?

Veneers are a bonded layer that is placed over the front surface of a tooth to correct a cosmetic concern. By using a veneer, the position, colour and the shape of a tooth may be disguised. A dark tooth can appear whiter, gaps can disappear or rotated teeth can appear straighter.
Veneers do not take the place of braces, but offer an alternative cosmetic treatment option for those patients that prefer to have an instant result. You will achieve a smile makeover in a few easy steps.

How many teeth should I veneer?

This will vary depending upon the cosmetic concern you have. Generally speaking, the greater the change in your smile you wish to achieve, the more teeth you should veneer. The best smile transformations are those where you cannot distinguish which teeth have been treated. We will guide you on how many teeth need treatment to give you the best result.

What types of veneers are there?

Resin Veneers

Resin Veneers are constructed of a highly polishable type of composite resin. They are designed and moulded to your tooth by hand. The artistry involved is unique for each tooth and smile. Being bonded and shaped, they do take some time to create over each tooth.

Frequently asked questions

What are Porcelain veneers?

Porcelain Veneers are a hard, thin structure that is bonded onto the surface of your natural tooth, to correct the aesthetic of your teeth. They are a cosmetic procedure to correct several different types of aesthetic imperfections, such as broken or badly chipped teeth, stained or discoloured teeth or to correct large spaces between teeth.

How do I know which veneers are right for me?

Resin veneers can be used in almost all patients. They are easy, quick and a single visit procedure. They are best used when your overall colour is good and we do not have to make major changes to the length or width of the teeth.
Porcelain veneers are for anyone who wants to improve the aesthetic of their teeth, for some it may be stains or a chipped tooth and for others it’s due to large gaps or broken teeth. They have high shine and really boost the appearance of your teeth.

If you are considering cosmetic dentistry but you are unsure if they are the right choice for you, we suggest coming in for an initial consultation to discuss your options and decide whether which veneers are right for you.

How long do dental veneers take?

Resin veneers are usually performed in a single longer appointment. We generally do not need to remove any tooth structure to place the veneers. Porcelain Veneers will take two visits, the first will be the preparation visit. We shape each tooth, by gently adjusting the natural shape of the tooth so that the veneer can be placed over the top of the tooth. A digital or silicone impression will be taken so that our specialist porcelain laboratory in Kew, Victoria can make your porcelain veneers.

The second visit will take place once the veneers are hand-crafted by the dental lab, which is about 2 weeks after the first visit. The dentist will check the shape, colour, length and size of the veneer before it’s bonded to the surface of your natural tooth.

How long do porcelain veneers last? Do I need maintenance?

Resin veneers will last a few years, and can be maintained with a simple check and clean visit. We always check all of our work, and will polish any stains from both your natural teeth and the resin veneers.
Porcelain Veneers are a conservative and durable choice to improve the aesthetic and the functionality of your teeth. Porcelain Veneers are resilient, but you need to avoid hard knocks to them. Due to the wear and tear, teeth can be subjected to, you can expect your porcelain veneers to last between 10 to 25 years. To ensure the lifespan is maximised for of your Porcelain Veneers, we recommend good oral hygiene and check-up appointments every six months for cleaning procedures.

Composite veneers vs. porcelain veneers | Which on is right for me?

More than 45% of people are unsatisfied with their smile, reports a 2019 survey. In fact, this is the first thing they would change about their appearance. Nearly one-third of survey participants said they don't show their smile when taking photos on social media.
But it doesn't have to be this way. If, for some reason, you're not happy with your smile, you can always get porcelain or composite veneers.
This procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth. It's ideal for those with chipped or stained teeth and can help correct small misalignments and gaps.
While it's true that porcelain veneers are more expensive, they last longer and require fewer repairs or replacements than composite.

Advantages & disadvantages of resin veneers

Composite veneers are an appealing option due to their convenience and low price tag.

Unlike porcelain veneers, they don't need to be prepared in the lab ahead of time. Therefore, your dentist can apply them during a single visit.

This procedure involves placing a thin, tooth-coloured resin to the outer surface of your teeth. The resin can mask tooth stains, fill small gaps, and improve your smile.

Since composite veneers require less preparation, they have a lower cost than porcelain veneers.

The downside is that they tend to wear down more easily. Their average lifespan is around four to eight years.

Composite is a strong material but not as durable as porcelain. For this reason, it's more prone to wear-and-tear, chipping, and damage and requires more frequent check-ups.

On the positive side, composite veneers are reversible.

If you ever decide to replace them, you can simply ask your dentist to do it. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are permanent.

Are porcelain veneers a better choice?

Many dental health professionals are no longer offering composite veneers because of their short lifespan. Instead, they recommend porcelain veneers, which are stronger and more durable.
With proper care, porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years. Unlike composite resin, they are stain-resistant and provide a more natural appearance.
Another difference between the two lies in how they are prepared.
Porcelain veneers are made in a lab ahead of time and require two or more visits to the dentist. They're usually ready within a week or two, but it's worth the wait.
Before applying your new veneers, the dentist will confirm that their shape, colour, and fit meet your needs. Since this procedure is irreversible, every detail matters.
Generally, porcelain veneers are a good choice for those with uneven teeth, worn enamel, or permanent stains that don't respond to tooth whitening treatments.
Another advantage is that they recreate the natural look of your teeth.
The only drawback is that you'll need to replace them in case of damage as they cannot be repaired. However, they're extremely durable and unlikely to break.
